Few sights compare to anchoring in Santorini's volcanic caldera beneath the cliffside village of Oia as the sun sets — one of the most iconic charter experiences in the world.

Santorini – A Volcanic Backdrop Under Sail

Santorini (Greek: Thira) is the result of a massive volcanic eruption around 3,600 years ago. The horseshoe-shaped caldera is what remains of the former volcanic crater. In the middle rises the small volcanic island of Nea Kameni, where steam still hisses and bubbles from its fumaroles. Sailing around the caldera is an unforgettable experience.

Anchoring in the Caldera

Anchoring in the caldera is possible but demanding: the seabed is deep (30–40 metres), and stern lines ashore are the norm. The anchorage off Fira, the island's capital, offers direct access to the cliff edge by cable car or donkey. The sunset over the caldera from Oia is among the most beautiful moments Greece has to offer.

Vlychada Marina in the south of the island is the official charter harbour. From here you can also explore the black lava beaches of Perivolos and Perissa. Wine tastings at the wineries of Pyrgos, where Santorini produces its distinctive Assyrtiko wine, are a cultural must.

Onward to the Southern Cyclades

From Santorini it is an easy sail to Ios, Folegandros and Sikinos, quieter islands with authentic Greek village life. Thirassia, the small sister island west of the caldera, offers secluded anchorages without mass tourism.

FAQ

Questions about Santorini

How deep is the water in the Santorini caldera?

The caldera is 300–400 metres deep. For anchoring, boats use the edge areas near the cliffs (30–50 m), where the anchor can reach the bottom. Stern lines to rocks or buoys are the norm.

Can you sail around the caldera?

Yes, a circuit of the caldera takes 4–6 hours and passes Fira, Oia, Thirassia and Nea Kameni. It is one of the most spectacular sailing trips in the Aegean.

When is the best time to sail around Santorini?

May and September are ideal: fewer tourists, pleasant temperatures (25–28°C) and moderate wind. In July and August the Meltemi can make the caldera choppy.
