The gulet is the traditional wooden sailing vessel of the Turkish and Greek coasts – spacious, always fully crewed, and the classic choice for the legendary 'Blue Voyage'.

The Gulet: A Turkish Cultural Vessel

The term "gulet" refers to a traditional Turkish wooden cutter, originally used as a fishing boat and cargo vessel along the Aegean coast. In the 1970s, affluent city dwellers from Istanbul discovered the potential of gulets for leisure trips; since then, gulet charter has become an established part of Turkish tourism.

Layout and Comfort

Modern charter gulets are far more comfortable than their origins suggest. The broad aft deck (pupa) with a sun platform, seating and shade is the heart of social life on board. The cabins below deck are fully air-conditioned; many gulets offer en-suite bathrooms with hot showers. On board you will find a galley, a bar and often a small lounge.

A gulet typically has a professional crew: captain, deckhand and cook. The cook prepares fresh Turkish meals every day, and breakfast and dinner are often included in the price of a gulet charter. The concept is known as a "Full Board Gulet Charter".

The Blue Cruise

The classic route runs from Bodrum via the Gökova Gulf, Göcek and Fethiye to Antalya, or in the opposite direction. En route you anchor in secluded bays, swim in turquoise water and visit ancient sites on the shore. No sailing licence is required, as the captain takes care of everything. Passengers enjoy, relax and swim.

Charter FAQ – Gulet

What does "Blue Cruise" (Blaue Reise) mean?

The Blue Cruise (Mavi Yolculuk) is a multi-day cruise aboard a gulet along the Turkish Aegean and Mediterranean coast. The term goes back to the Turkish writer Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı, who immortalised this route in literature in the 1950s.

Is a crew always included with a gulet charter?

Yes, every gulet sails with its own crew. At least a captain and a deckhand are always on board. Many gulets also have a cook, who is mandatory for full-board bookings.

Can you also book a gulet for private corporate events?

Gulets are frequently booked for corporate incentives, team events and birthday celebrations. For 10 people or more, a gulet is often more cost-effective than a hotel. Catering, music and special excursions can be arranged individually.
