Charter Basics

Yacht Charter Without a License – Is It Possible?

Yes — With a Skippered Charter

Anyone without a boating license can still charter a yacht: with a so-called skippered charter (also called "crewed charter"), an experienced, licensed skipper is included who operates the boat. You enjoy the trip without needing to navigate or maneuver yourself.

What Does a Skipper Cost?

A professional skipper typically costs between $120 and $220 per day, plus food and accommodation on board. On larger motor yachts or superyachts, a full crew (skipper, steward/ess, sometimes a cook) is often already included in the charter price.

Who Is Skippered Charter For?

  • Beginners with no sailing or boating experience at all
  • Families who want to relax rather than navigate
  • Groups chartering a larger yacht that would require a higher-grade license anyway
  • Travelers exploring an unfamiliar destination for the first time

Alternative: Bareboat with a License

If you want to steer yourself, you'll need an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or an equivalent national license, plus usually a VHF radio certificate. Requirements vary by destination — see our guide on sailing licenses for details.

Bottom Line

A missing license is no reason to skip a yacht vacation. Skippered charter is available in every one of our 46 destinations and is often the more relaxed way to discover a new destination.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a skipper for a motor yacht too if I have no license?

Yes, without a valid boating license a skipper is required regardless of boat type, whether sailing yacht or motor yacht.

Can I take the helm myself during the trip?

Usually yes, many skippers are happy to let guests take the wheel when weather and traffic conditions allow — but legal responsibility stays with the skipper.
