Destination

Hvar

Croatia · Adriatic

Hvar is regarded as one of Croatia's most beautiful and sunniest islands and a sought-after destination for sailors from across Europe. Stari Grad (the old town), the scent of lavender and the lively harbour promenade make Hvar an unforgettable experience.

Sailing on and around Hvar

Hvar is one of the longest islands in the Adriatic and boasts 2,726 hours of sunshine a year, more than anywhere else in Croatia. The island's main town, Hvar Town, with its Venetian old town and the Fortica fortress, draws the crowds. Hvar Marina lies in the heart of the town and gives direct access to restaurants, bars and the cultural scene.

The Pakleni Islands

Just off the coast of Hvar Town lie the Pakleni Islands (Paklinski otoci), an archipelago of small islands with dreamy coves. Palmižana on the island of Sveti Klement is known for its restaurants set in nature. Carpe Diem Beach on Stipanska attracts party-goers in summer.

If you are looking for peace and quiet, anchor in the many bays along Hvar's north coast or sail to the island of Vis, one of the wildest and most unspoiled islands in Dalmatia. The fishing village of Komiža and the Blue Cave near Biševo are highlights.

Lavender and local cuisine

Inland on Hvar, extensive lavender fields stretch out and are in full bloom in June. Local products such as lavender oil, rosemary honey and the robust red wine Plavac Mali make sought-after souvenirs. Authentic konobas serve fresh fish, octopus salad and home-made pasta.

FAQ

Questions about Hvar

Can I charter directly in Hvar Marina?

Yes, several charter companies have bases in or near Hvar Town. Alternatively, Hvar is a popular port of call on round trips from Split or Trogir.

How far are the Pakleni Islands from Hvar?

The Pakleni Islands begin right outside the harbour entrance of Hvar Town; the nearest island (Jerolim) is only one nautical mile away. Palmižana on Sveti Klement lies about 3 nautical miles to the west.

Is Hvar too crowded in July and August?

Hvar Town is very busy in high summer. If you want some peace, head for the island's east coast or the neighbouring islands of Šćedro and Vis. Early in the morning, the bays of the Pakleni Islands are still pleasantly quiet.
