The original – wind, waves and true sailing feel
The sailing yacht is the classic among charter yachts. Whether a compact single-hander for two or a spacious family yacht with four cabins – the monohull sailing yacht offers the right boat for every crew. Here, wind matters, not the engine.
Sailing yachts are the most popular boat category in the charter market, and for good reason: they combine sporty sailing fun with comfortable cabins, a fully equipped galley, and everything you need for a week on board. Modern charter yachts from builders like Beneteau, Jeanneau, Bavaria and Hanse are reliable, low-maintenance and suitable for every destination.
Charter yachts start at compact 8-meter boats with one or two cabins – ideal for couples or small families. The most common charter size is between 10 and 13 meters with two to four cabins and one or two bathrooms (heads). For larger groups of 8 or more, yachts of 14 to 20 meters with up to six cabins are available.
Typical features of modern charter yachts: bow thruster for easy maneuvering, furling headsail, bimini sun shade, cockpit shower, GPS plotter, AIS, VHF radio and complete safety equipment per national regulations.
If you don't yet have enough sailing experience, you can add a professional skipper. Skipper costs typically run $110–200 per day plus meals. As a rule of thumb: if you can't confidently maneuver in a harbor, consider a skipper. Most destinations also require a valid sailing license (ICC, SKS or similar).
Sailing yachts are suitable for nearly every destination. Croatia, Greece and Turkey are the classics; more advanced sailors head to the Caribbean or the Atlantic islands. Especially recommended for beginners: the Ionian Sea with moderate winds and short legs.
Most sailing destinations require an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or a national license plus a VHF radio certificate. Exact requirements vary by country – Croatia requires SKS or ICC + SRC, Greece is similar, Turkey also accepts European licenses.
Standard rate includes: the boat with full equipment (safety, navigation, galley), liability insurance and hull insurance with deductible. Not included: skipper, final cleaning, fuel, mooring fees, tourist tax and provisioning.
For peak season (July/August in Croatia and Greece), booking 6–12 months ahead is recommended. Shoulder season (May, June, September) bookings 2–4 months ahead are usually fine.
