Power, speed and luxury: the fast way to your destination
If you don't miss sailing under wind, or simply don't have time for long crossings, a motor yacht is the choice. Modern charter motor yachts combine hotel-level comfort with mobility.
If you do not miss sailing, or have no time for long passages, choose a motor yacht. Modern charter motor yachts from builders such as Bavaria, Galeon, Prestige or Princess combine hotel-level comfort with mobility. Air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, a stewardess pantry and bathrooms with showers are standard in the upper class.
In many cruising areas, including Croatia, Greece and Turkey, no sailing licence is required for motor yachts up to a certain power limit. Specifically, in Croatia motorboats up to 7 hp/5.15 kW can be driven without a licence. For more powerful engines, the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or a coastal powerboat licence (Sportbootführerschein See) is required. Charter companies generally also offer a skipper service.
Charter prices for motor yachts vary far more with size and model than for sailing yachts. Importantly, fuel use is considerable. A mid-sized motor yacht with two 200 hp engines burns 30–50 litres per hour at moderate speed. Cruising 4–5 hours a day, budget €150–250 for fuel alone per day.
Motor yachts suit groups who prefer shorter itineraries, want to reach several destinations in a day, or value comfort and speed. For short weekend trips or limited holiday time, a motor yacht is the more efficient choice than a sailing yacht.
That depends on the cruising area and the engine power. In Croatia, boats up to 5.15 kW (approx. 7 hp) can be driven without a licence; more powerful engines require a coastal powerboat licence (SBF See) or an ICC. Similar rules apply in Greece and Turkey. Charter companies will give you precise information on the requirements.
Between €100 and €400 per day, depending on engine power and driving style. A 10 m motor yacht with 2×150 hp burns roughly 20–35 litres per hour; a 15 m yacht with 2×300 hp correspondingly more. Always plan the diesel budget separately.
With a skipper booked, yes, without restriction. Without a skipper, you should at least be comfortable with basic harbour manoeuvres and chart work. Many charter companies offer short familiarisation trips.
