Charter Basics

Charter Contract: The Checklist Before You Sign

1. Charter Price and Extra Costs

Check whether APA, final cleaning, mooring fees and tourist tax are included in the price or listed separately.

2. Deposit and Liability

The security deposit ranges from $1,600 to $16,000+ depending on boat size. Clarify how and when it's refunded and how much the deductible is in case of damage.

3. Insurance Coverage

Hull insurance and liability should be clearly stated in the contract, including exclusions (e.g. gross negligence, sailing outside the agreed area).

4. Handover and Return Times

Typical handover is Saturday afternoon with return the following Saturday morning. Delays can trigger extra fees — this should be clearly regulated in the contract.

5. Cancellation Terms

Depending on how far in advance you cancel, tiered cancellation fees apply (often 25–100% depending on timing). Trip cancellation insurance can be worthwhile.

6. Destination Restrictions

Some contracts exclude certain waters (e.g. trips to Montenegro or the open sea) — clarify this in advance if your route is affected.

7. Inventory List

A detailed check-in/check-out inventory list protects you from unjustified damage claims upon return.
