Which Sailing License Is Needed Where?
International Certificate of Competence (ICC)
The ICC is accepted in most European charter destinations, including Croatia, Greece, Italy and Turkey.
Croatia
Generally requires a national coastal skipper's license or an ICC, plus a VHF radio certificate (SRC). For smaller boats below certain power/size thresholds, a basic license may suffice.
Greece
Similar requirements to Croatia: a national license or ICC plus radio certificate. For larger yachts over roughly 40 feet, proof of sailing experience is often additionally required.
Turkey
Also accepts European licenses such as the ICC; for gulet charter with crew, no personal license is needed at all.
Caribbean
Here, an international charter qualification (e.g. ICC or comparable US/UK certificates) is usually required — requirements vary by island/operator.
Without a License: Book a Skipper
In every destination and for every boat type, the alternative without your own license is: book a skipper. See our guide "Yacht Charter Without a License".
Frequently asked questions
Is a basic national boating license alone enough?
In many destinations, yes, but an additional radio certificate (SRC) is often required — best to confirm the exact requirements with your chosen operator before booking.
What if my license isn't recognized in a destination?
The fallback option remains a skippered charter — available without issue in all 46 of our destinations.
