Mykonos

Greece · Aegean

Mykonos is the glamour island of the Cyclades and a magnet for sailors who want to combine style with sailing pleasure. From Mykonos Marina, the archaeological site of Delos is just one nautical mile away, a contrast between ancient heritage and modern luxury.

Mykonos – Cycladic Glamour under Sail

With its iconic white windmills, the narrow lanes of Chora and its vibrant nightlife, Mykonos is one of Greece's best-known islands. For sailors it offers not only glamour but also a strategic position in the heart of the Cyclades.

Delos – Antiquity Next Door

Just one nautical mile south-west of Mykonos lies the uninhabited island of Delos, one of the ancient world's most important sacred sites. According to myth Apollo was born here; the extensive archaeological site, with its Terrace of the Lions, mosaic-floored houses and the Sanctuary of Apollo, is open daily except Mondays. A day trip by dinghy or water taxi is a must.

From Mykonos it is easy to sail to the northern Cyclades: Tinos with the Panagia Evangelistria, Syros with the neo-Gothic cathedral in Ermoupoli, and the smaller islands of Ikaria and Fourni. To the south lie Paros and Naxos, the latter with the impressive Portara gateway and a fertile interior.

Wind and Weather

The Meltemi hits Mykonos particularly hard in high summer. The north coast is often rough; sheltered bays lie on the south side. Beginners should choose May or September for more relaxed conditions.
