Destination

Mallorca

Spain · Western Mediterranean

Mallorca is Europe's most popular sailing island, offering a perfect mix of dreamy beaches, the majestic Tramuntana mountains and a well-developed network of harbours. From the island, Ibiza and Menorca are also within day-trip range.

Mallorca – Queen of the Balearics

Mallorca is Europe's favourite island and a first-class cruising ground for sailors. The variety is impressive: in the north-west the UNESCO-protected Tramuntana mountains, with steep coastlines and the dramatic harbour of Sóller; in the east the sweeping calas with turquoise, clear water; in the south the lunar landscape of Cap de ses Salines.

The Most Beautiful Anchorages

Mallorca's east coast has the most picturesque bays: Cala Mondragó in the natural park of the same name, Cala Figuera with its traditional fishing harbour, and Cala d'Or are essential ports of call. In the north, the Bay of Pollença with the pretty Puerto Pollença offers good shelter from the Tramuntana wind. The Bay of Alcúdia is ideal for families.

Palma de Mallorca, with its Gothic cathedral La Seu, the Palau de l'Almudaina and the lively harbour promenade, is a delight to visit. The Real Club Náutico de Palma is one of the most renowned yacht clubs in Europe.

Sailing to the Neighbouring Islands

Ibiza lies about 90 nautical miles to the west, an overnight passage or a multi-day stage. Menorca (about 100 nm to the east) tempts with unspoilt natural harbours and is much quieter than Mallorca. Cabrera, a national park archipelago south of Mallorca, requires a permit but is absolutely worth the effort.

FAQ

Questions about Mallorca

Do I need a sailing licence for Spain?

In Spain a sailing licence is mandatory for boats over 6 m in length and/or with more than 6 hp. The international ICC or the Spanish Título de Patrón de Embarcación de Recreo (PER) are accepted.

Can you sail from Mallorca to Ibiza?

Yes, the crossing from Mallorca to Ibiza is about 85–100 nautical miles. In good wind it can be done in 14–18 hours; most sailors plan an overnight passage or use Formentera as an intermediate stop.

When does the Tramuntana wind blow in Mallorca?

The Tramuntana is a strong northerly wind that occurs mainly in spring and autumn. In summer it is less frequent and weaker, but it can spring up suddenly. Local weather services should be consulted daily.
