Yacht Technology: Basic Knowledge for Charterers
Engine and Fuel
Check the diesel level regularly, especially before longer motoring passages during calms. Most charter boats have a range of 150–300 nautical miles under engine power.
Batteries and Power
Onboard batteries power the fridge, navigation and lighting — during extended anchoring without shore power, the engine should run briefly and regularly to recharge them.
Water Tank and Toilets
Fresh water is limited on board — careful use (short showers) extends the time between refill stops. Onboard toilets (seacocks) should be explained thoroughly at check-in.
Frequently asked questions
What do I do in case of a technical failure on board?
Every charter base provides a 24/7 emergency number — always call there first for technical problems instead of attempting repairs yourself.
