Motorboat License for Charter — What You Need to Know
National Powerboat Licenses
A national powerboat license is the basic requirement for larger motor yachts in European charter, usually combined with an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) recognized in most destinations.
License-Free Limits
In some destinations (e.g. Croatia), boats with low engine power up to a certain threshold are license-free — exact thresholds vary by country and should be confirmed with the operator in advance.
Alternative: Book a Skipper
Without the right license, the option remains the same as for sailing yachts: book a skippered charter — see our guide Yacht Charter Without a License.
Frequently asked questions
Is an inland waterway license enough for a sea charter?
No, a sea charter generally requires a coastal/offshore powerboat license (or equivalent international certificate) — an inland-only license does not qualify.
